Jot plain-file notes for Linux

Terms of Service

Last updated: 16 October 2026

The software

Jot is free and open source software distributed under the MIT License. The licence text governs your rights to use, copy, modify, and redistribute it, and is included with the source code.

No service

Jot is an application that runs on your computer. There is no hosted service, no account, and nothing to sign up for. These terms cover the software and this website only. If you keep your notes in a sync service, your use of it is governed by that provider's own terms.

Your responsibilities

Your notes are yours, and so is what you put in them. Jot acts on your instructions, including changing, renaming, and moving notes to the trash.

No warranty

Jot is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and noninfringement. In no event shall the authors or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages, or other liability arising from the software or its use. Keep your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose; because your notes are plain files, any backup tool can copy them.

Changes

If these terms change, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
